According to the voice of the Hawkeyes, Gary Dolphin, Nathan Stanley has won the QB battle and will be the starter on Saturday when Wyoming pays a visit to Kinnick Stadium.

According to most prognosticators, including those of us @BCDivide, Stanley was the odds on favorite to win the job over Tyler Wiegers. Stanley and Wiegers are both considered pro style pocket passers. Wiegers has a bit more mobility to him, but he’s definitely not what anyone would call a dual threat guy. Stanley is a little bit bigger, and it is clear he has the strongest arm on the team.
Ken O’Keefe, the QB coach, discussed the strengths of these two during the Hawkeye’s media day a couple weeks ago. He said both players are excellent leaders, but they have different styles. Wiegers is more of a vocal leader, and Stanley is the quiet type. He said Wiegers has really improved his ability to diagnose the defense in order to make more deliberate decisions in the passing game. He acknowledged the fact that Stanley has the biggest arm, but he also said that he’s a bigger guy and he needs to continue to fine tune his footwork.
Basically, the way I see it is this… Stanley is the younger player with a higher ceiling. If the race was truly 50/50 then as a coaching staff you have to go with the younger guy who has more talent/potential. It is really as simple as that.
To be fair, this doesn’t necessarily mean Stanley has solidified himself as the starter. It just means he’ll get the first opportunity to prove that he was the right choice. He’ll still need to go out there and perform on Saturday. If he doesn’t perform well then it wouldn’t be surprising to see Wiegers get some live game reps.
Right now, however, this is Nathan Stanley’s team. Step up to the plate young man. Hawkeye Nation will rally behind you.
