Iowa Soccer Kicks Off the Season this Weekend

Iowa City – The summer is in its final week for University of Iowa students. Classes begin this coming Monday.

A few days ahead of classes the Hawkeye women’s soccer team will kick off their season on the road in Virginia. Their first opponent, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), will host Iowa Friday evening. The following Sunday morning, Richmond will take on Iowa.

Both opponents finished last year with similar records as the Hawkeyes. VCU went 8-10-1. Richmond was one victory better at 9-9-1. Iowa was 8-11-1 with seven losses coming on the road.

The Hawkeyes will have to find a way to replace on of their leading goal scorers, Bri Toelle, who graduated after last season. The Hawkeyes return last falls co-points leader Karly Stuenkal. She accounted for five goals and four assists in her junior season.

Iowa has finished below .500 the last two season after a 14-7-1 record in head coach Dave DiIanni’s first season.
The Iowa women’s soccer team will be in action for the first time at home against in-state rival Iowa State on Friday, August 25. They will also play Notre Dame at home the following Sunday, August 27.
