Incoming! Kentucky SG CJ Fredrick Commits to Iowa and the Hawks Scholarship Situation Gets Crowded

Story by Derek Pech

Fran McCaffery and his Iowa Hawkeyes basketball team picked up a big commitment for the 2018 class from 6’4 165 lb. CJ Fredrick out of Louisville, KY. Fredrick is a SG for Covington Catholic High School. He has a silky smooth game, a pretty jumper, and an accurate outside shooting touch.

According to the recruiting boards Fredrick was only a two star prospect, but the kid has offers from the likes of Indiana and Xavier. It’s clear he was a player on the rise. He is a thin kid for being 6’4, but he has the frame to add plenty of muscle. It sounds as if he’s seen a lot of Joe Wieskamp on the AAU circuit, and he’s excited for the opportunity to play alongside him.

Speaking of Joe Wieskamp, he currently has a hold of the only scholarship that the Hawkeyes have available for the 2018 class. Fredrick’s commitment certainly makes things interesting. When you consider the fact that Connor McCaffery is currently a walk-on that could leave two scholarship worthy players without a scholarship. Meaning a couple other players may need to leave the program in order to open up scholarships for these guys.

The Hawks are loaded in the front court. It’s likely that a couple of those guys aren’t going to the get the type of playing time they’d like. It wouldn’t be surprising to see one of them transfer if they aren’t getting on the court. The same could be said for a guy like Maishe Dailey or maybe even a potential grad transfer for Brady Ellingson.

What happens will largely depend on how this coming season plays out. Fran will need to figure out his lineup and playing time, and then the scholarship situation will work itself out.
