Hawkeye Football Roster Updates

Story by Derek Pech

Johnston, Iowa – There has been a flurry of roster changes to the Hawkeye football team in the past few days that includes both players and coaches. In order to keep you all updated I thought I’d throw together a post with all of the changes in one spot. Here you go:

Departures:

Iowa’s Athletic Department confirmed the departures of the following players on Monday afternoon:

WR Adrian Falconer – This past season was Falconer’s (6-0, 192 lbs) junior year. He only saw action in one game in 2017 after seeing action in 13 games in 2015 and 2016. The writing was probably on the wall for Falconer. If he wanted more playing time he was going to have to go elsewhere.

WR Matt Quarells – The Hawkeyes added Quarells (6-1, 195 lbs) during training camp this past season. He was a grad transfer from New Mexico. Quarells didn’t end up playing in a single game this past season and has decided to transfer to Southern Illinois to finish his collegiate football career.

OL Lucas LeGrand – As a junior this past season LeGrand (6-foot-5, 295 lbs) played in two games. In 2016 LeGrand actually started two games at the center position and made an appearance in 10 games. For whatever reason, LeGrand’s playing time seemed to be diminishing and he has decided to leave the Iowa football program.

Arrivals:

The following incoming scholarship players are now on campus and with the team:

Spencer Petras, QB – Freshmen, 6-5 225 lbs, will wear #7

Dillon Doyle, LB – Freshmen, 6-3, 215 lbs, will wear the famous #43

Nico Ragaini, WR – Freshmen, 6-0, 185 lbs, will wear #89

Daviyon Nixon, DL – Sophomore, 6-5, 295 lbs, will wear #54

Walk-Ons Colton Dinsdale and Nick Anderson have also joined the team and will be competing in the spring.

Colton Dinsdale, DB – Junior, 6-0, 215 lbs, will wear #41

Nick Anderson, LB – Junior, 6-3, 230 lbs, will wear #47

New Coach (10th assistant)

Derrick Foster – Kirk Ferentz announced today that the football program has officially added Foster to the offensive coaching staff. Ferentz did not specifically say which position Foster will be coaching, but it is being widely speculated that he will be the Tight Ends coach. Which would officially allow Levar Woods to focus only on Special Teams.

Foster has been the running backs coach and run-game coordinator at Samford University in Alabama. He has a lot of ties to the state of Georgia and it appears that is an area that Ferentz and his staff would like to focus more on in terms of recruiting.

Recruiting

TE Lucas Empen – Empen is a 6-7 235 lb tight end prospect who is an in-state kid that played his high school ball at Northeast HS. He chose to walk-on at Iowa over a handful of scholarship offers from smaller schools. Empen is currently projected as a tight end, but much of that depends on how his body could develop after he enters Coach Chris Doyle’s strength and conditioning program.

LB Mitchell Riggs – On January 21st Riggs announced that he will be walking on at the University of Iowa. Riggs is a 6-2 215 lb LB from the powerhouse Dowling Catholic football program.

OL Kyle Sorensen – On Sunday Sorensen announced he would be accepting a preferred walk-on opportunity at the University of Iowa. Sorensen is a 6-6 250 lb offensive line prospect from Waukee, Iowa. He chose to walk on at Iowa over scholarship offers from UNI, Western Illinois, and Northwest Missouri State.

DE Nathan Nelson – The younger brother of Iowa standout DE Anthony Nelson has decided to walk-on at Iowa. Nathan Nelson was a dominant player at Waukee High School. At 6-4, 215 lbs, Nelson is a little undersized as a defensive end prospect, but he has plenty of time to grow into his body. He’ll get that chance with Coach Doyle’s strength program.
