Gustafson Leads the Way

Story by Luke Maiers

Iowa City, IA – The Iowa wrestling team is rolling this year. They are coming off of a dominant performance against Michigan St., but there is another team who has been racking up the wins in Carver Hawkeye Arena this season; the women’s basketball team.

The Iowa women only have two losses as the schedule is moving into the tenth week of the season. The Hawks are soaring as they currently sit with a record of 15-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Their only two losses have come at the hands of a ranked Florida St. team and Maryland. The team as a whole is playing great, but there is a star on this team and her name is Megan Gustafson.

Gustafson is a junior with Iowa out of Port Wing, Wisconsin. Her sister, mother and father have all either played basketball at the college level or are currently playing. The basketball blood line runs deep and it is showing in Gustafson’s production on the floor this season.

There has already been nine weeks go by this basketball season, and Megan Gustafson just keeps raking in the weekly Big Ten awards. She is nine for nine on the season in winning Big Ten Player of the Week honors, and with the stats she is throwing up, it is hard to argue against them.

Gustafson on the season is averaging a double-double with 22.7 points per game and 12.6 rebounds per game. Her shooting numbers are through the roof at Carver as she shoots 69% from the floor and 84% from the free throw line. Gustafson has not yet attempted a three pointer yet this season, but she knows where she can score from on the floor.

She is consistent as well as her lowest scoring game this season was 15 and she did that twice. Rebounding doesn’t dip down either as she has double digit rebounds in all but one game on the season.

This Iowa women’s team can do something special if they keep winning. A lot of times this team gets overlooked, but Iowa fans should start paying attention because come March, this will be a fun team to watch. With Bluder and Gustafson at the wheel, just sit back and enjoy the ride.
