Guard Christian Williams Transfers From Iowa

Iowa City – It was just a matter of time before someone departed the Iowa men’s basketball team. Simply put, there were just to many guys that could play and not enough playing time.

Head coach Fran McCaffery announced that junior Christian Williams has decided to transfer at semesters end. Williams has been granted his release from his scholarship.

“Christian informed me today of his decision,” McCaffery said. “Christian is a terrific young man with tremendous character. We are disappointed that Christian will no longer be a Hawkeye.” In his statement, McCaffery wishes Williams the best with his future endeavors.

The 6’5″ guard played 54 games the last two years. In that, he averaged 2.4 points. This year, Williams would have likely sat behind guards Jordan Bohannon and Isaiah Moss.

In a brief quote, Williams noted that he hopes to continue his basketball and academic career closer to home. He came to Iowa City from Decatur, Illinois. Although he has not made it clear where he will transfer, based on his comment it is likely he will look to the mid-major Illinois schools. Bradley, Illinois State, Eastern Illinois, and Western Illinois all look like viable options.

Last season, Williams played a similar amount of minutes to Brady Ellingson, who returns again this year. Yesterday we mentioned Williams as possibly an important piece for the Hawkeyes this year, that won’t be the case now.
