Coach Ferentz Says Thank You to Hawkeye Fans From Monaco

Story by Derek Pech

Des Moines, Iowa – Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz and his wife Mary are currently representing the University of Iowa in the European country of Monaco at the 2018 Laureus World Sports Awards (@LaureusSports).

The University of Iowa is a finalist for the Laureus Best Sporting Moment of the Year award thanks to the now infamous wave to the children inside the Stead Family Children’s Hospital that takes place by Hawkeye fans inside Kinnick Stadium at the end of the first quarter during every home game (and even during away games now).

As everyone knows by now, “the wave” started during the Hawkeyes first football game of 2017 vs Wyoming. The wave instantly went viral, and touched the hearts of people across the United States. Now, it appears, the wave has touched hearts across the world as the gesture was chosen to be a finalist for the Best Sporting Moment of the Year.

The winner of the award was just announced and unfortunately the Wave finished second. Here’s a sincere heartfelt thank you video from Coach Kirk Ferentz in Monaco:
