Bohannon Joins Street At The Top

Iowa City, IA – It hasn’t been the season Jordan Bohannon wanted. From a team perspective it has been full of ups and downs. Individually speaking however, he is currently on pace to break a number of records held by some of the greatest basketball players in Iowa history. He is already in the top 10 in three pointers made. He’s on the verge of entering the top 10 in total assists, and after this evening he now joins Chris Street atop the record books for consecutive free throws made at 34..

Bohannon tied Street’s record early on in the game. Then with only a couple minutes remaining he had the opportunity to break Street’s record, but missed badly, something that is rare for him. He was asked about the miss in a post game interview on the Big Ten Network and had the following to say about it:

“Yeah, obviously that’s not my record to have. It deserves to stay in his name. I’ve been really close with his family these past couple years, and listening to his story honestly has really made me emotional. These past couple of games I knew what I wanted to do.”

On social media, Hawkeye fans and followers have been questioning whether Jordan may intentionally miss the free throw to keep Street’s record alive. Street set the record in 1993 with 34 consecutive free throws made. He went 2/2 in a loss to Duke and would never shoot another free throw again after being tragically killed in a car accident on January 19th.

Intentionally missing the free throw to allow Street to remain atop the record books with him was certainly a class move. It was a show of respect from one great Hawkeye to another. This has been a season with a lot of lows, but what we saw tonight out of Jordan Bohannon will be a memory that Hawkeye fans will hold onto forever. A tip of the cap is owed to that young man.
